Challenge
Reinventing a Place of Care Without Erasing Its Emotional Identity
The Jorishof site carried emotional weight: a place associated with aging, illness, and loss. The challenge was to shift that narrative — to preserve the dignity of its origins while creating a hopeful, intergenerational community. The existing structure posed spatial and technical constraints, requiring creative solutions to integrate modern systems within its 1960s bones.

Approach
Respecting the Past, Building a Framework for the Future
The team’s approach centered on adaptive empathy: listening to the site’s history before imposing new design. Instead of demolition, Bakkers | Hommen employed circular renovation — upgrading insulation, structure, and façade while retaining over 70% of the original materials. The new Jorishof celebrates its past in every brick, yet functions like a 21st-century energy-efficient building.

Sustainability as a Form of Social Care
Jorishof is more than a redevelopment — it’s a case study in how sustainability can serve people, not just performance targets. The project redefined what “care” means in modern real estate: inclusion, well-being, and environmental continuity all under one roof.
