Katoenhuis Rotterdam is a hub for Immersive Experiences (IX) and technology in the heart of Rotterdam Makers District (M4H). Built in 1950 and once known as the “Van Bennekum’s Havenbedrijf Katoenloods”, Katoenhuis is a multifunctional space hosting artist and makers’ studios and working facilities, exhibition, and event spaces. As part of the South Holland Immersive Network & Ecosystem (SHINE), Katoenhuis acts as a unifying hub for the region’s community, fostering opportunities to present and experiment. Activities hosted at Katoenhuis include events such as the Conflux Festival, Rotterdam Gaming Connect, and more. The space is home to artists and companies like SenseGlove and Zalán Szakács.
Katoenhuis Rotterdam is an initiative by Concrete Culture. Concrete Culture uses the generative power of art, culture, and technology within (historic) real estate and area developments to make a social impact, drive economic growth, strengthen communities, and combat gentrification.
By bringing diverse artists, technologists, and makers under one roof, Concrete Culture initiatives create a space for research, experimentation, and presentation of immersive experiences and contribute to the growth of the immersive technology sector in the Netherlands.

Urban Redevelopment
Immersive Experiences (IX) and technology hub in the heart of Rotterdam Makers District (M4H)
M4H is considered one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in the Netherlands in the coming years. Within this transformation, the Keile District holds a unique position, both in its programming and as an organization. Keile Gebiedscooperatie (Keile Area Association) consists of building owners as its core members, along with one seat for the Municipality of Rotterdam and one seat for Guardian of Nature. Its mission is to support and grow the creative community in M4H—keeping local talent, pushing back against gentrification, and providing makers and artists with spaces to work, exhibit, and collaborate. At the same time, it preserves the area’s industrial heritage and focus on sustainable urban planning.

We believe that immersive experiences are essential for enabling new ways of learning, working, designing, and living together. By providing space for innovative IX-makers and projects, the Katoenhuis aims to be both a driving force and a critical observer of this development. We strive to be a physical space where creative and technological innovation converge—a place where makers, technologists, audiences, educators, and businesses come together to explore and critically reflect on the possibilities of IX. By combining space for development, encounter, and experience, Katoenhuis contributes to the realization of a creative, inclusive, and future-oriented economy. Through international connections, strong local roots, and interdisciplinary collaboration, Katoenhuis aspires to be a central player in the immersive culture and technology ecosystem— in Rotterdam, South Holland, Netherlands and far beyond.
