A residential building designed for a distinctive living experience

KPVM01 is a social-rent residential building in Brainpark, Rotterdam, designed by V8 Architects under the direction of architect Michiel Rapphorst. Conceived as a pavilion-like structure, the building opens itself to its green surroundings and establishes a strong relationship with the public realm.

KPVM01 comprises 171 two- and three-room social rental apartments. The mix of dwelling types supports different household compositions while maintaining a calm and coherent residential structure throughout the building.

challenge

Challenge

Creating Identity Within a Large-Scale Urban Transformation

The challenge was to design a residential building that could stand out architecturally while remaining part of a larger urban framework. KPVM01 needed to provide density without feeling closed or anonymous, and to offer social housing with the same architectural ambition as any other residential typology.

approach

Approach

Architecture as a Pavilion in the City

KPVM01 is conceived as a pavilion-like residential building that opens itself to its green surroundings. The design balances robustness and refinement, creating a clear architectural presence while maintaining a human scale. By carefully shaping the building volume and its relationship to the public realm, KPVM01 integrates seamlessly into the evolving Brainpark district.

impact

Strengthening Everyday Urban Living

KPVM01 contributes high-quality social housing to Rotterdam while enhancing the spatial quality of its surroundings. The building supports inclusive urban growth by combining strong architecture with accessibility, liveability, and long-term residential value.
