Building Development

Designing the City as an Organism

Nautilus reimagines density as livability. The development merges residential, creative, and cultural spaces into one cohesive structure that breathes life into a previously underused part of Rotterdam. The building’s hybrid design encourages interaction, sustainability, and adaptability — an urban experiment that redefined compact living.

Flexible units cater to both entrepreneurs and residents, blurring the line between domestic and professional life.

Challenge

Creating High Urban Density Without Compromising Human Comfort

The challenge was to design a building that intensified urban activity while maintaining intimacy and livability. Nautilus had to provide both vibrancy and rest — a paradox resolved through smart architecture.

Approach

Architecture for Connection, Not Just Construction

Bakkers | Hommen treated Nautilus as a vertical neighborhood. Layered terraces, natural light, and mixed-use zoning made the building adaptable, inclusive, and deeply connected to its users.
