Extending a Living Ecosystem

Building on the success of its predecessor, Nautilus 2.0 extends the original concept of hybrid living into a more sustainable, community-driven format. This new phase introduces mid-market rentals, social housing, and local cultural programming within an expanded, zero-waste framework. Designed for flexibility and longevity, it embodies the principle of “Build less, live more.”

The extension reuses materials from Nautilus Phase I — a literal continuation of circular thinking.

Challenge

Preserving the Nautilus Identity While Doubling Its Scale

The challenge lay in maintaining the human-scale vibrancy of Nautilus while accommodating growth. This required careful planning to preserve the sense of belonging that made the first phase successful.

Approach

Designing for Regeneration, Not Just Construction

Bakkers | Hommen redefined urban expansion through adaptive architecture. Every addition to Nautilus 2.0 strengthens the social and ecological systems already in place — growth guided by restraint and purpose.

The Evolution of a Circular Urban Model

Nautilus 2.0 demonstrates how architecture can evolve organically — balancing human needs, community identity, and environmental integrity across generations.

Expanded the Nautilus community by adding accessible housing, shared facilities, and spaces for local engagement.
