challenge

Challenge

Balancing privacy and social life within one residential block

The challenge was to create a building that offers both individual comfort and a sense of community. With a wide range of apartment types and residents, the design needed to prevent anonymity while respecting privacy and personal space.

approach

Approach

Using shared spaces to connect diverse residents

The design integrates communal areas at strategic levels to naturally encourage encounters without forcing interaction. Clear layouts, high-quality finishes, and a strong relationship between private and shared spaces create a balanced living environment where residents can choose how and when they engage.

impact

A human-scaled contribution to Phase 3

This building strengthens the K.P. van der Mandelekwartier by adding a residential block that prioritises comfort, diversity, and social cohesion.

By offering a wide mix of apartment types and shared living spaces, the building supports a diverse community and encourages everyday interaction. Communal areas provide opportunities for connection, helping residents feel at home within a larger urban setting.
